The Palestine-Norway Medical Research Group

The prestigious journal The Lancet published a series articles in its on line edition (July 2, 2010) on Health in the Occupied Palestinian Territory

They refer to the activities carried out over several years by the Palestine-Norway Medical Research Group, coordinated by Prof. Espen Bjertness of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, who is also a member of the Steering Committee of PEACE. Activities included grants for Palestinian students to obtain their PhD degrees and exchange of professors:

-  4 professors and researchers of Birzeit University (Abdullatif Husseini, Rita Giasaman, Niveen M E Abu and Rmeileh, Rana Khatib);

-  1 professor and researcher of Hebron University (Khaldoun Nijem);

- 3 professors and researchers of the University of Oslo (Petter Kristensen, Gerd Holmboe-Ottesen, Espen Bjertness;

-  4 Palestinian PhD students at the University of Oslo (Mikki N, Issa Y, Abbu-Shama F and Hassan-Bitar S.);

-  2 PhD candidates in the process of applying for uptake in the PhD programme of the University of Oslo (Nemer M, and Jaradat Y).

 

A brief history and the main results of the cooperation between the Department of General Practice and Community Medicine, University of Oslo and Palestinian institutions is presented in the Supplementary web appendix to the abstract: "15 years of cooperation in research and higher education between the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, and Palestinian institutions" by Espen Bjertness, Khaldoun Nijem, Abdullatif Husseini, Rita Giacaman, Gerd Holmboe-Ottesen and Petter Kristensen. The cooperation was supported by the NUFU and the Quota scholarship scheme of the University of Oslo.
